 OVERALL SUMMARY:

Have over 35 years of research experience in energy conversion technologies. Former Supervisor for the Thermal Science Team at the US DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory where I lead teams focused on advanced energy production and emissions control through the exercise of three capability areas: Reactor Engineering, Power Systems Science and Electrochemistry. Experience working on fluidized beds, gasification, solid fuel combustion, chemical looping technology and emissions reduction.  I have over 100 per reviewed publications and more than 150 conference papers/presentations on fluidization, combustion, gasification, chemical looping, emissions reduction, fluidization, and mass transfer. Awards: Three-time member of Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of scientists in the world making both the lifetime and the individual year for the three most recent reported years, 2020, 2021 & 2022, received best paper at the 25th Annual Pittsburgh Coal Conference, the best paper for journal Energies 10th anniversary, and the 2021 Percy Nicholls Award. Co-chair of the Clearwater Clean Energy Conference, an Associate (Lead) Editor/Editorial Board Member for the publication International Journal of Energy for a Clean Environment and past directors for the AIChE Particle Technology Forum and the Energy Transport Division. I have a B.S. from Clarkson University and, an M.S, and PhD from the University of New Hampshire; all in Chemical Engineering.

Managerial:

  • Supervisory Interdisciplinary General Engineer for the Department of Energy, Fossil energy and Carbon Management, National Energy Technology Laboratory Thermal Science Team Supervisor leading a multi-disciplinary, multi-location team of 13 federal researchers and associated post-doc researchers and three competency areas: Multi-Phase Chemical Reactor and Process Development, Advanced Combustion & Heat Transfer Testing and Simulation and Electrochemical Physics and Device Engineering.
  • Director of Environmental Technologies Department at Thermo Power. Responsible for direction, general management and technical success of the department as well as generating and developing new businesses in the core areas and commercializing developed technologies.
  • Developed a European business company, ECOGY - a Thermo Power Joint Venture in Poland, for products and services. Established the initial business plan with pro-forma income, balance and cash flow statements. Negotiated the company agreement between the partners, the site agreement for the first project, the financing documents for the first project and the subcontracts with the local construction firms. As President, responsible for the annual business plan, financial statements and operation of the company.

Strategic Planning:

  • At NETL, prepared strategic direction for Thermal Science Team capabilities and competencies. Coordinated and lead the effort for the development of NETL’s DAC Center to evaluate a variety of CO2removal technologies and projects. Assessed and evaluated impact of CO2 removal policies on team capabilities and adjusted team focus. Developed long range plans; organized and directed the work of the team; and provide expert advice to senior leadership.
  • At Thermo Power, assembled the entire business venture for a joint venture company in Poland, ECOGY.  This company consists of four partners with Thermo Power Corporation owning 25 percent. Identified the potential investment partners and then marketed the business to these companies and individuals.
  • Developed marketing plan and lead marketing effort of Thermo Power’s technology to governmental and commercial groups in the energy and environmental fields.
  • Lead the effort to develop technology licenses. These licenses have been for Thermo Power to license emerging technology to improve its position and for Thermo Power to license its developed technology to others.

Technical:

  • Lead the design conversion of the chemical looping reactor into the multi purpose Advanced Scale Up Reactor, A 1000C, 11 Bar CFB, Bubbling bed, moving bed solids fed reactor.
  • Developed DAC reactor concept for CO2 removal using an NETL developed novel sorbent.
  • Lead/manage team developing a CO2 conversion laboratory focusing on thermo-catalytic conversion to fuels and chemicals.
  • Modeled CO2 adsorption for point PEI NETL sorbent process
  • Developed fundamental theory for mass and heat transfer in circulating fluidized bed reactors based upon cluster size and fluctuating energy.

07/04 – 04/25  DOE NETL, Morgantown

            04/14 to 04/25) Team Supervisor: Thermal Science Team, Energy Conversion Engineering (ECE/TS)

  • Supervise and lead a multi-disciplinary, multi-location team of 13 federal researchers and associated post-doc researchers. working on the development of CO2 Removal, CO2 conversion, Gasification of biomass & wastes for H2 production, chemical looping combustion, advanced combustion concepts (sCO2 and rotating detonating engines) and reversable solid oxide cells. Ensure that all milestones are met timely. Lead research on CO2 removal, chemical looping, carrier attrition and fluidization
    • Direct RD&D activities and provides active program management to ensure program and technical goals are met.
    • Determine how projects in the Thermal Science Team should be conducted and identify programmatic issues, alternative feasible solutions, and provide senior management with recommendations for improving existing programs and processes.
    • Provide written products including strategic plans, briefings, talking points, and technical evaluations of the technologies for the Thermal Science Team.

(01/10 to 04/14) Research Engineer, (Energy Process Innovation Directorate and Computational Science Directorate)

            Technical Coordinator for the ICMI Chemical Looping Combustion projects. In this position, oversaw the technical areas of the chemical looping projects: carrier development, carrier kinetics, reactor modeling and simulation and process plant design. Additionally, was Federal Project Manager for RIC ARRA Project where I managed the Carbon Capture and Sequestration Simulation Initiative (C2S2I). Working effectively with the senior staff for C2S2I and the RIC management to communicate with SCC and the HQ program manager. Ensure that all aspects of the project comply with the established project management procedures for ARRA projects and the Federal Project Management Center guidelines and procedures. Generates the risk assessment and risk register and ensures that the risk register and template are maintained as the project is executed. Ensure that all reports and documentation (project management plans, project execution plans and quarterly reports) were properly recoded. Provide effective participation and leadership for C2S2I management activities including providing review of the quarterly and annual reports, review of the project work plans, review of the project budget and earned value reporting, development and maintenance of the project HQ fact sheets, and weekly inputs in a timely manner.  Conducts and attend meetings to assess project status and communicates work status to RIC management.

(07/04 to 01/10) Project Manager, Gasification and Combustion Projects Division

Managed several projects in the gasification and combustion areas. The most significant of these is the Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF) project, a multi year $450 million program with an annual budget of $25 million for the development of the Transport Gasifier and test platform for advanced coal conversion technologies. Other projects include modeling and experimental support activities for the Transport Gasifier and advanced concept power/energy facilities, an advanced steam turbine program, and a mercury removal program. Also acted as the assistant to the Gasification Technologies Manager 04/07 through 01/10. In this assignment, I assisted the gasification Technology Manager in addition to maintaining all my existing project management activities. Specifically in this position I gave several presentations for the Technology Manager.

Director of Technology Degree Program and Assistant Professor of Technology

Responsible for the development of the Technology Degree program and educating the students in the science of technology, project management, and entrepreneurial business development. Courses developed and taught: Evolution of Technology I & II (an introduction to chemical and mechanical engineering), Strategic Management of Technology, Project Management, Process Design and Development, Fluid Systems, Thermal Systems, and Ideas to Markets I & II (a two-semester senior course to develop a prototype technology-based device and build a business plan for the product). Additionally, conducted research at the DOE/NETL facility in Morgantown WV through the ORISE Program. In this research I worked on multiphase gas solids flow analysis.

01/89‑ 06/00   Thermo Technologies Div. of Thermo Power Corp., a Thermo Electron Company

Director of New Business Development and Director of Environmental Technologies

Director of New Business Development. Responsible for generating new business for all the Thermo Technology groups.  This requires familiar and intimate knowledge of the technologies being developed throughout Thermo Technologies.  This includes spark ignition and compression ignition engine modifications and conversions to compressed natural gas, gas compressor development, selective emitter systems for Thermophotovoltaic energy systems as well as many others.

Director of Environmental Technologies. Responsible for the direction, general management and technical success of the department as well as generating and developing new businesses in the core areas, commercializing developed technologies within the department, and developing a European business outlet for products and research from the department. The department focuses on emissions reduction, combustion, gasification and heat recovery technologies. Specific emphasis of the department is on emissions control through the use of sorbent injection for SO2 control; staged combustion, air staging, and reburning for in flame control of NOx; post‑combustion corona discharge technology for NOx reduction; and corona discharge technology for VOC reduction. In addition, over the last two years have broadened in the biomedical and advanced materials areas. Participated directly in all of the programs as either the Program Manager and principal investigator I identified a DOE program in the area of East European business development and successfully proposed a program that would commercialize our technology and started a joint venture company in Poland, ECOGY.

1994‑ 1998      ECOGY, President. ECOGY is a Polish limited liability company with its place of business in Krakow.  This company consists of four partners with Thermo Power Corporation owning 25 percent.  As such, one of the functions of my position at Tecogen is to be President of ECOGY.  In this capacity, I put together the entire business venture. This effort included the establishment of the initial business plan with pro‑forma income, balance and cash flow statements such that investment moneys could be found.  I identified the potential investment partners and then marketed the business to these companies and individuals.  The result was the formation of a company with 65 percent of the capital from JAIDO, 25 percent from Thermo Power and 10 percent from two Polish firms.  In the process of forming the company, I lead all the negotiations for Thermo Power. Specifically, I negotiated the company agreement between the partners, the site agreement for the first project, the financing documents for the first project and the subcontracts with the local construction firms.   Most recently, I put together the materials for the annual meeting and lead the presentation to the partners board.  My presentation summarized the past performance as well as defined the projections for the coming year and laid out the course of action to accomplish these projections.

01/85 – 01/89  Riley Stoker Corporation

Staff Engineer

Program Manager for the design and installation of two circulating fluidized bed capital appropriation projects. Program Manager for combustion and flow investigations in the two fluidized bed facilities.  These programs explored the dense bubbling bed and the entrained bed dynamics in a circulating fluidized bed, the MSFBC.  Program Manager for DOE Mild Gasification Contract. This program was in conjunction with AMAX Coal company and Western Research Institute and focused on designing and building a shallow, inclined fluidized bed dryer and mild gasifier together with the liquid recovery equipment. Principal investigator for a DOE AFBC Advanced Systems Contract. This program had two parts, the first was to develop a packaged small industrial scale fluidized bed system and to extend the performance range for intermediate industrial scale fluidized bed systems. As a senior engineer, conducted slagging combustor retrofit investigations for oil and PC fired boilers. These studies investigated combustor‑boiler interfacing, furnace performance and experimental flow modeling investigations of the combustor and the furnace. The combustor flow modeling investigations mapped the three-dimensional flow field existing at the intersection of coaxial confined jets and the furnace modeling mapped the combustor jet penetration into the furnace to ensure good mixing and no impingement.  Also, conducted two phase flow investigations to model the salted flow in the horizontal section of long L‑valves to improve the flow quality and reduce the pressure drop.

06/82 – 01/85  The University of New Hampshire

Research Assistant

Conducted a research program on solid‑gas flow phenomena in a circulating high velocity fluidized bed (HVFB) system. Developed hydrodynamic models that predict the pressure drop in the HVFB and the system.  Developed combustion and desulfurization models that predict coal conversion and sulfur removal in a HVFB combustion system.

01/80 – 05/82  The University of New Hampshire

Research Assistant

Conducted plant economic analysis for solar‑coal hybrid gasification systems.  Designed two‑stage fluidized bed coal gasification process using simulated solar‑thermal energy. Performed the design calculations to size the equipment for a 1.0 kg/hr two‑stage continuous process.  Contacted vendors to supply the equipment, assembled and operated equipment and analyzed initial data.

12/78 – 01/80  Combustion Engineering

Engineer

Developed test programs for solid‑liquid separation of scrubber effluent slurry and analyzed the results to generate a new series of empirical design equations.  Performed process feasibility study for the neutralization of an acidic environment existing from air pollution control equipment. Analyzed forced oxidation dewatering data for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
